Hij volgde zijn opleiding bij zijn vader, maar ging ook naar de Koninklijke Academie voor Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam. Koekkoek woonde en werkte in vooral in Amsterdam en Haarlem. Hij genoot als kunstenaar veel succes met zijn zee en riviergezichten.
