From behind the struggle emerges the delicately curled motif of the eggplant leaves and a strangely detached flower on the right (which does not actually look like a true eggplant bud)

The elaborate display of feathers overflowing from the fisherman's basket and curling around the tree is the clue that Hokusai is depicting the folk tale of Hagoromo
